The microbiology faculty is genuinely so supportive. I felt confident that they had my back throughout my undergraduate career.
My favorite program that the faculty initiated was the “Microbiology Transfer Program,” where undergraduate students who have just transferred to Rutgers receive an undergraduate mentor to help them adjust to Rutgers for their first semester. Transferring schools is a tough transition; you don’t need quite as much guidance as you did when you were a freshman, but you would still appreciate some advice as you navigate the new campus and resources. The transfer program put me in touch with some amazing microbiology students and made me more comfortable and confident in my decisions. I was also fortunate enough to become a mentor in my last few semesters. I am really appreciative of Dr. Ines Rauschenbach and Dr. Karla Esquilín-Lebron for initiating this program!
My advice to prospective students would be not to overwork yourself while still trying your best. Take your time to find what works for you and where your interests lie. Make time for your education, health, socialization, and creativity!
