After observing microbes in pond water for an experiment, I immediately wanted to learn more about microbiology. I was intrigued by Rutgers’ history of soil microbiology, especially the discovery of Streptomyces griseus that treats tuberculosis. Discovering the importance of beneficial microbes made me want to join the microbiology program at Rutgers to learn more. Taking microbiology classes at Rutgers taught me how important microbes are in maintaining human gut health, removing toxic metals in the environment, protecting plants from diseases and more!
The microbiology faculty informed me that I could pursue a career in industries such as agricultural, environmental, pharmaceutical and even become a scientific librarian or writer. It was so important for me to know that I could work in so many places;
it gave me the confidence I needed to complete my degree and look to the future with optimism and excitement. Each faculty member also encouraged me whenever I was struggling with classes; my advisor was especially helpful in this area, and I think of her now as my friend in addition to my advisor. I highly recommend the microbiology program to students who want to expand their knowledge and reach their full potential as microbiologists.
