Research Interests

Applied Sustainability Research and Development

Dr. Ward has taken a multidisciplinary and integrative approach in research development, implementation, and scale up through teambuilding, cross disciplinary collective impact methodologies, and where appropriate, integrating triple bottom line sustainability goals.

Research interests include the reutilization of socially generated organic residuals: as sources of agricultural nutrients, renewable energy products, value-added crop improvement products, and clean water; efficient renewable residual conversion technologies integrating high-yield efficiencies and low environmental impact; the role, control and impacts of microorganisms and antibiotic resistance development factors in soil, water, animal systems, and nutraceutical use.

Current applied sustainability initiatives include: strategic support to municipalities changing waste residual management philosophies; redirecting organic resources to renewable conversion for natural gas and biofuel production; co-location of renewable energy production facilities with fertilizer, recycled glass, and plastic reforming manufacture; redesign of wastewater treatment and waste handling facilities to support on renewable energy modalities, clean water production facilities, and damaged soil revitalization products.

Other current research includes: Use of Biophotonics Imaging Strategies to Establish Potentially Unknown Infection Sites of Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis in a Rodent Model (Mississippi State University); Analysis of wheat containing foods for pesticide residues, and their effects on the microbiome (Rutgers University).

Privately, Dr. Ward is a social entrepreneur working on globally-relevant sustainability issues related to waste residual management, resulting new product development, and agricultural environmental impacts.
