Course Synopsis: Molecular Toxicology Lab (SEBS)

Offered: This is a laboratory course and is offered in the Spring semester.

Pre-requisite: Biochemistry 413, Recommended Biochemical Mech. Toxicology 11:115:422

Format: Lecture and laboratory on a single day

Description: General biochemical techniques used in toxicology are covered with an emphasis on model systems and current techniques. This is a team taught course with individuals with specific expertise covering those sections of the course.
Topics Covered: The course covers laboratory techniques such as dose response, morphological effects, alternative test species to higher vertebrates, molecular probes for evaluating DNA, RNA and protein effects following xenobiotic exposure and genetic and epigenetic techniques.


Course Book: No specific text is assigned, because journal articles and materials are supplied through Sakai. A laboratory manual is reproduced and can be purchased at the beginning of class.


Learning Goals: The students are expected to gain a fundamental understanding of biochemical and molecular tools used in Toxicology. They are also expected to understand how scientific studies are designed and carried out to prove or disprove a hypothesis. The information discussed in this class will allow the student to perfom experiments that are currently in practice in biochemal based toxicology laboratories.


Examinations: Class grades are based on lab reports and questions posed at the end of each exercise.. Class attendance is also calculated into the course grade.


Other Requirements: All laboratories must be made up if missed with a doctors note. Laboratories that are missed without an approved absence will result in a zero for that laboratory.
